The conference will examine the lives and diverse roles of grandmothers within African cultures. Grandmothers are valuable sources of wisdom, affection, knowledge and survival skills. While all grandmothers are not saintly, they are definitely keepers of our cultural traditions, and role models. Panelists and audience members will share honest recollections of women who were known as loving, strong-willed, easygoing or creative. Featured this year are stories about women from Africa and the Caribbean. In addition, the year 2002 marks the beginning of The National Black Herstory Memorial Quilt Project that will result in the creation of large quilts honoring both women of African descent and their allies. Finished quilts will find a permanent home in the future National Black Herstory Research Library and Museum.
