Mission
The National Black Herstory Task
Force, Inc. is a non-profit educational and cultural organization
founded to provide vehicles to collect, research, authenticate,
document, archive and celebrate the legacies and lives of
women of African descent and their alliances.
We seek to correct voids and misinformation
in the telling of our stories. Educational and cultural
programs will be offered to the masses that promote and
celebrate the unique contributions of our ancestors. The
National Black Herstory Task Force, Inc. will develop and
maintain a research library that includes cataloged archives,
online testimonies, and published or unpublished works about
women of African descent worldwide. We will establish independent
chapters and work with similar organizations in a uniform
effort to achieve these goals.
Respectfully, we note that in order to
accurately tell our stories, we must include the relationships
shared with our brothers and allies. We will seek to honor
those comrades who risked their positions in society, and
offered their lives, to assist us. We will also provide
factual documentation of our trials and tribulations. Together,
with the support of educators, professionals and grassroots
members of the community, we shall teach the world community
that there cannot be an accurate recording of world history
that does not include herstory.
History
Founded in 1997, the National Black
Herstory Task Force, Inc. (NBHTF) is headquartered in Atlanta,
Georgia, USA. The NBHTF brings together diverse groups for
the purpose of ensuring the inclusion of the stories of
women of African descent in the recording of world history.
While this is an extensive undertaking, with proper planning,
support and determination, the NBHTF will forge pathways
that lead to the preservation and exhibition of these stories.
Educational Tools
Training programs are conducted
to teach volunteers to document, archive and promote the
collection of stories. Internship programs, book clubs,
Internet conferencing and traveling exhibits are being developed.
Research Library and Cultural
Center
A primary goal of the NBHTF is to
build a research library and interactive cultural center.
This facility will be open to everyone and available for
scholarly as well as individual research. We also envision
a state of the art online library and visual arts gallery
that will include a portal for research written by or about
women of African descent and their alliances.
Global Partnerships
The NBHTF seeks to develop partnerships throughout the world
to help us achieve our mission. We are extremely grateful
to our alliances and continued support from the Emory University
Women's Center.
Conferences and Awards Ceremonies
The NBHTF proudly presents the National
Black Herstory Conference and Awards Banquet annually, during
the month of March. These events have been held on the campuses
of Spelman College and Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
The conference sessions are designed to explore and chronicle
historical, literary, social, artistic, environmental and
economic issues affecting women of African descent world-wide.
Conferences have also included plays and literary readings
at the Martin Luther King National Historic Site, (National
Park Service), book fairs and exhibitions in other locations.
Past
Conference Themes
Honors
In 2000, the United States President's
Commission on the Celebration of Women in America presented
a Presidential Commission Certificate of Recognition to
the NBHTF for developing ways to best acknowledge and celebrate
the roles and accomplishments of women in American History.
In 1999, the City of Atlanta, GA became the first city to
proclaimed March, National Black Herstory Month.
National Black Herstory Month
After
reading a book on feminist theory, Khalil Osiris Sudan (pictured
on left), co-founder of the National Black Herstory
Task Force was inspired with the idea of organizing a Black
Herstory Week observance. This week long celebration was
expanded by the NBHTF into what is now officially known
as National Black Herstory Month and celebrated during the
month of March.
Join us in the effort to make National
Black Herstory Month a global celebration. Anyone interested
in Black Herstory can conduct a celebration. If you desire
our assistance, please write for suggestions. Together we
can make National Black Herstory Month an annual event celebrated
worldwide.
